The problem this exists to solve
Etsy does not take one fee. It takes a stack of them, and they compound in ways that are easy to underestimate: a $0.20 listing fee for every unit sold, a 6.5% transaction fee charged not just on the item but on the shipping and gift wrap the buyer pays, a payment processing fee that differs by country, an Offsite Ads fee of 12โ15% on attributed orders, a regulatory operating fee in some markets, and 2.5% currency conversion if your listing and payout currencies differ.
Sellers routinely price items using a mental model of "Etsy takes about 10%," discover the deposit is smaller than expected, and cannot tell which fee caused the gap. Meanwhile many fee calculators online were built years ago, quietly show superseded rates, and present a single total with no itemization โ so there is no way to check their arithmetic.
What SellerLedger does differently
- It shows the receipt, not just the answer. Every fee appears as its own line, so you can see exactly where the money went and verify each figure independently.
- It works backwards too. Because fees are mostly percentages, you cannot add them on top of your costs โ raising your price raises the fee. The reverse mode solves the equation properly and tells you the price that lands your target profit.
- The fee schedule is editable and dated. The header shows when rates were last verified. If Etsy changes something before we do, you can correct it yourself in the Fee schedule panel and get an accurate answer immediately.
- Break-even is shown by default. The lowest price that does not lose you money, given your materials, labour and shipping costs.
- Nothing is uploaded. There is no account, no server and no database. The calculator is a single file that runs in your browser.
How the numbers are produced
Fees are computed on the buyer's total (item price ร quantity, plus gift wrap per item, plus the shipping you charge) and each fee line is rounded to the cent individually, which mirrors how Etsy bills them rather than rounding once at the end. The Offsite Ads fee respects the $100 per-order cap. Listing fees multiply by quantity, because multi-quantity listings renew per unit sold.
The calculations are covered by an automated test suite that reproduces published fee examples to the cent, plus randomised tests asserting that the fee lines always sum to the total and that the reverse solver never returns a price that undershoots your target.
What is deliberately excluded
Sales tax and VAT that Etsy collects and remits on your behalf are not seller revenue and are excluded from the fee base. Shipping labels purchased through Etsy, Etsy Plus subscriptions, pattern fees and advertising spend on Etsy Ads are separate charges that depend on your account rather than the individual sale, so they are not modelled here. Add them to your cost fields if you want them reflected in profit.
How rates are kept current
Fee schedules are reviewed against Etsy's published rates and re-verified periodically; the date in the site header is the last check, not the date the page was written. Rate accuracy is the single most valuable thing this tool offers, so corrections take priority over new features. If you spot a discrepancy, tell us and it will be fixed quickly.
Independence
SellerLedger is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Etsy, Inc. We do not receive commission on your sales and have no incentive to make any price look better than it is.
What is coming
The same receipt-style treatment for other marketplaces where sellers face layered fees โ eBay, Vinted, Depop, Poshmark, Mercari, TikTok Shop โ plus a cross-platform comparison that answers "where does this item net me the most?"
